My plaque is reversing less than a year after my quadruple bypass surgery.
I have outlined some of the pitfalls of filling our guts with guts; how the sun will shine brighter and the water will taste better if we eat lots of plants. I have not shared results.
I am due for my next checkup at the Cardiologist in the next month. This is from my last visit in November.
Anyone can pick apart how long humans have been eating meat or how or brains would be the size of peas without animal protein. There are thousands of studies and experts that will refute any effort that promotes focusing your diet on grains, vegetables & fruits.
I take 10mg of Crestor a day. Maybe that is the cause of the Plaque reversal? Maybe it is the baby aspirin? Maybe it is the 30 mile run I ran on Sunday? Maybe its the aluminium foil hat I made myself to avoid cosmic radiation…
I say: try it. Try eating nothing but Plants & Grains for a week. Two weeks. One month. Don’t tell anyone, do it for yourself.
There is no downside… only upside.
Ian

Hi Ian,
You and I both know that plaque reserval is a function of the diet. Exercise alone does not reverse plaque. Jim Fixx is the best example of this that I can think of. Anyway…CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Dr. Romeo. It’s a start. 40 years to build it, try and get rid of it in less!
Remember, at the very least you have stabilized the small plaques which are the real killers. Your heart is at minimum getting 20% increased O2 for function. It’s all good news. Take care.
I’m trying – I still don’t like most vegetables. But I’m generally eating little red meat, dairy and wheat these days. Still love chicken and some cheese. Can now do a mile in under 20 minutes which is good for me, and I’m now walking about 3 miles a day. Am on Benicar for high blood pressure and a baby aspirin along with some vitamins. I hope to avoid heart surgery in the future.
If you want to discuss anything shoot me an email. Wholefed@gmail.com. My wife and I hae a bunch of tips on how to eat plants. Ian
In my humble opinion, Ian is on the right track. I have seen excellent results in significantly lowering LDL, Trigs and total cholesterol by juicing vegetables every day (ie Kale, Swiss Chard, Spinach, Broccoli, Tomato(fruit technically), parsley, etc. PLUS also eat beef(in small amounts few times per week) BUT it must be grass fed, plus Raw MIlk Cheese and oily fish(sardines, mackerel, anchovy, etc), eggs , beans along with Vit D3, Magnesium and fish oil supplementation. I believe non grass fed beef is poison but grass fed is very heart healthy for heart.
Great news Ian! You serve as an inspiration and real proof that there is life after a heart attack or heart surgery and it can be better than before!
thank you. If you have any questions or comments you know where to reach me. Ian
Ian. What I read made good sense. I have high LDL CHLO. AND no HDL. I am terrified as I do not know what to eat. I am scared I may have a heart attack. Can you point me in a direction so I can address both. I am sure you can help. Thanks LInda
I am by no means a Doctor. Linda have you seen a cardiologist? You comment sounded like you a very worried. Adopting a plant based diet and getting results can take time. I will get back to you shortly. Ian
This is fantastic!! Congratulations!!! What a way to teach by example. So inspiring, thanks for sharing your story! Cheers.
This is fantastic, Congratulations!!!! Way to teach is by example. So inspiring, thanks for sharing your story! To our good health…cheers!
Thank you for the comment. Ian
Ian-
Compelling progress on your risk factors! And I used to think CBAG was the intervention of choice, before I discovered the metabolic wonders of Magnesium.
It’s likely your Cardiologist hasn’t talked w/ you about Mg deficiency — in large part because he wasn’t trained about minerals in Med School. I’ve become a lay expert in this issue and can assure you that ALL 10 components of Endothelial Dysfunction (e.g. inflammation, oxidized LDL, increased ROS, etc.) are due to Mg defiency. You can read about it in Clinical Science Jrl (Maier J 2012)
Thank you very much. I will look into that. Inflammation is turning out to be a much better indicator of heart disease than cholesterol. Recent NY article discusses this approach. I had an advanced lipid profile recently with numerous inflammation marker testing, all happily in the green now. C Reactive Protein would be a great test to take in your thirities…Ian

I experimented with a low meat diet with my entire family for a month, just to see if it would fly. The only flesh we had for a month was fish and one night at a japanese steak house. Slept better, felt better, lost a few pounds, learned alot. Found a lot of new foods to eat that are very enjoyable. All you need to do is just set forth and try something different. (Just so you understand, I have high cholesterol that is pretty much unmanageable by diet or exercise)
That is great Tim. It is about doing what is good for your family. Period.
My Lipoprotein(a) is genetically very dense, so I know that now after the bypass. Dr. Campbell says that Nutrition controls the expression of genes. Meaning, we all have cancer cells in us, but we can control whether or not they are expressed by controlling the inputs. In the China Study, Campbell actually turned on and off cancer cells using high levels of casein, protein found in milk.
Thank you for the comment. Ian
Ian, Thanks for the posts and the additional information re Magnesium that you’re sharing with your readers. Foods are a great source of this critical mineral, but folks will never get to therapeutic dose (2X RDA = 850-1,000 mg Mg/day for men, slightly less for women) eating tons of nuts and seeds. For those interested in learning more about the impact of Mg deficiency, here is a recent post of mine on HuffPost.

And to get to the heart of the matter, Inflammation as you note is the real threat. Statins are just an effective way to make money. Here’s how it works: *STRESS* >> Magnesium Loss >> Inflammation >> ALL Chronic Disease. And the precipitating event in ALL Inflammation is Magnesium deficiency which is highlighted below in this important article from 1992. This study redefined the origin of disease.

And finally, we’re still in the process of building out this site, but I’ve dedicated the balance of my life to educating people about Magnesium and Mg Deficiency so that they can make more informed decisions about their health. I would invite folks to
learn more by going to http://www.magfor.org
Kudo’s for all your great work. Hopefully this information will open new vistas of understanding and healing for this community..
Cool stuff on mg from a follower.
Hello, Ian. Just curious if you have ever heard of a product by Hyland’s called Bioplasma? It is a mineral combination of twelve minerals that Americans, especially, are HUGELY deficient in!! I am with you on the Magnesium and how awesome it is but these tissue/cell salts (as they are sometimes referred to) are amazing!! I have had great success with them and wanted to share this with you. Sounds like you are on the road to recovery. May God continue to Bless you abundantly and continue sharing your story….
Sincerely,
Christi Cisek

Great plant-strong stuff Ian. Keep doing what you’re doing!
I had an MI in a hospital where I had been admitted with chest pain. I was diagnosed with unstable angina, The left main descending artery and a couple of arteries were blocked. I was sent to chennai(madras) to a medical school where an angiogram was done, I was told to have a bypass which would give me 10 years I was told- which I refused. The alternative was heavy medication which i followed for a day. I went on high fibre low fat diet(less fried/baked foods) and natural methods and a right selection of plant foods in a lacto veg diet.. No surgery and no mediation, It is 15 yesrs since the MI. My total cholesterol is low ; My HDL is over 65 usually. My BP is 110/70 and my sugar level is optimal too. I am 73 and doing well thanks
Awesome story. Thank You for sharing. Ian
Great to hear acharya. Thanks for sharing.
Ian, thanks for sharing all that you’ve been through with us. I have had 2 MI’s, 3 stents and a 6 way bypass-I am 50 years old. A plant based diet is the reason I am not in the hospital again-I feel so much better after going vegetarian. Any recurring chest pressure is gone, clearly there was plaque reversal. Keep writing Ian, you are inspiring all of us!
That is great. My biggest fear is going back in. Wow. You should be writing the books. Please stay in touch and write me anytime you have a topic on your mind.
Ps. Did you read my book? Can I send it to you? Just give me your email. Ian
Ian, I’d appreciate having your book. Could you send it to paintsmoke@gmail.com
Thank you so much! If I can reciprocate in some way, please let me know. I’ll certainly write you if anything comes up with me.
Joe, go on the site below tomorrow. I am running a free promotion for two days. If you like the book write something nice
. Thanks again, Joe.
Instead of Flowers: Beat Chronic Diseases
Will do, looking forward to your book! Best of health and cheers Ian.
Way to go Joe! Keep doing what you’re doing.
Thanks Tan, I’ll keep on keeping on..
I’d like to open by thanking Ian for writing this book. I had browsed to Ian’s web site, [...], while doing my usual casual research on heart disease. I can relate to Ian-at age 38 I experienced a heart attack and had 3 stents put in coronary arteries. 10 years later the stents clogged up as they often do and I had another heart attack and this time a 6 way bypass. I am now 50. I did not eat poorly after my first heart attack but I did still eat meat and cheese about every other day (not anymore). I figured exercise would counteract my fat intake-as Ian says in the book, this is not the case. I am not overweight (5’10, 190 lbs), I jog, walk or do light weights at least 5 days a week. My whole family has a constant history of severe heart disease.
What I know; after all that I’ve been through, Ian is not only giving you the truth but he is giving you the mental and emotional tools needed to take action and control your own health. Believe me I have tried it both ways. A plant based diet will keep you alive without being totally dependent on pills or worse. Conversely, a meat, cheese and fat based diet will put you under the knife in the OR if you have heart disease.
What you need to know; you can stop and even reverse your heart disease. It is up to you, not the medical pros. Get this book to learn how and why. If you want specific plant based eating plans there are plenty out there (Ian lists book suggestions) but get this book and do what it says to avoid open heart surgery.
A little extra; eat raw garlic every day and use apple cider vinegar. I drink at least 2 glasses of water with 2 tablespoons of ACV every day.
Ian – thank you for the excellent book. I have many books on heart disease prevention; yours gives something that none of the others give-philosophy, companionship and support from someone who has been there. I will be buying multiple copies of it. See you on the blog.
Off to the beach, but just saw this. awesome. Really really great. Thank you.
You’re welcome. It was easy to say since it’s true.
Howdy! I could have sworn I’ve been to this blog before but after reading through some of the post I realized it’s new to me.
Nonetheless, I’m definitely delighted I found it and I’ll be bookmarking and checking back frequently!
Thanks for reading it. Ian
