I often contemplate my choices when it was determined that I had 4 blockages. A month from turning 40, it seemed like the only decision was to proceed with immediate bypass surgery. I didn’t know there existed any alternatives. You are presented with the data and the presentation is done by surgeons. They are trained to “fix” the issue and move on. In hindsight, and we all know hindsight is 20/20… I think I would have held off a bit. I did not have the knowledge to weigh the options.
The reality is living with the blockages might have been so stressful it caused more harm than good. I have a hard time thinking about getting in shape physically knowing about the 95% blocked artery. However, the evidence is so clear on Reversing Heart Disease through nutrition that a “healing” approach could have been suggested.
No one is going to suggest the “healing” approach once you are diagnosed within the medical community. And I do not blame that industry one bit. Imagine the typical patient who is morbidly obese and has multiple issues. The Doctor has to address each issue as quickly as possible. And the fact is that most patients are not going to adhere to a “healing” approach anyway.
We are a nation built on quick fixes and it works for the masses. I read recently if 10 percent of this country decided to eat organically we would not have enough food to do it. The same relates to the medical community. The institution is built on a foundation of “fix” it quick and move on. It is designed for 99% of the population.
The trick to living well is to move away from the 99% and become the 1%. We hear all about the 1% of the population controlling 45% of the wealth but rarely about the 1% that has no health issues.
I believe this 1% is eating a Plant Based diet, with a very low fat intake. This group is living outside of the typical approach towards health. They live longer and they live well. They seek knowledge and approach health logically.
Unfortunately for a lot of us, we only find this way of living after we have had a major event.
I will close with this, Kris Carr (Crazy, Sexy Diet author) says it all the time: BECOME THE CEO OF YOUR OWN HEALTH. No one else is going to take care of you better than yourself.
(T. Colin Campbell, The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted. Dallas, Texas: Benbella Books, 2006. p. 128.)A patient with a heart problem at forty-four years decided to try out Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. ‘s dietary program without any cholesterol-lowering medication, and after thirty-two months, this patient reversed his heart disease and lowered his blood cholesterol to 89 mg/dL. The picture on the left section shows his coronary artery before switching to the plant-based diet. The one on the right shows the same artery opening up after adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. Dr. Caldwell has been doing studies of patients whose blood cholesterol changed after adapting his recommended diet since 1985. By 2003.
