Hypothetical Radio Interview with: Ian Welch

National Public Radio:  Good morning Mr. Welch, it is wonderful to have you on our show today to give us an update on the State of the Union regarding our overall health in the year 2030.

Mr. Welch:  It is an honor to be here and represent this great country of ours.  It seems like only yesterday that I was beginning my education in Plant Based Nutrition with Dr. Colin Campbell.

NPR:  How were you introduced to Dr. Campbell initially?

Mr. Welch:  The very first mention of Dr. Campbell was in the hospital while I recovered from quadruple bypass surgery at the age of 40.  I had been given a book, written by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease.  The book constantly referred to the China Study, the largest human study of nutrition of its time back then.

You have to understand, back in 2011 this country was facing an epidemic of obesity and subsequently the chronic diseases associated it.  Our health care costs were spiraling out of control and no one was getting healthier.  I believe it was the first generation that actually was not destined to live longer than their parents.

NPR:  I was too young to remember the exact events that led up to the great transformation that occurred in the late 2010 decade, can you elaborate?

Mr. Welch:  Honestly, it was a number of events that produced the new understanding of Nutrition.  The environmental damage caused by livestock was a large contributor to change.  But ultimately it was the people that brought the issue to the forefront.  Back then the food we were presented with was completely controlled by our government and large corporations.  However it was unsustainable.  People were sick and drugs & surgery could not help.  But it was money that eventually turned the shift towards health.  We as taxpayers could not afford to get sicker; as I said before it was unsustainable.

NPR:  In 2016, the U.S. Government implemented drastic changes to its policy towards nutrition, what was the framework for those changes.

Mr. Welch:  It was the tireless struggle by a few that ultimately changed the nation and just in time in my opinion.

The framework was based on the Eight Principles of Food & Health, presented by Dr. Campbell.  Nowadays we refer to them as the Eight Commandments of Food & Health, after Dr. Campbell received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2020.  The Principles worked because they were so simple to implement and the success rates for the overall population were very high.  The Principles were based on millions of years of evolution, in which we as humans primarily lived off of plants & grains.

NPR: Can you list them for our listeners?

Mr. Welch: It would be my pleasure.

  1. Nutrition represents the combined activities of countless food substances. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
  2. Vitamin supplements are not a panacea for good health.
  3. There are virtually no nutrients in animal-based foods that are not better provided by plants.
  4. Genes do not determine disease on their own. Genes function only by being activated, or expressed, and nutrition plays a critical role in determining which genes, good and bad, are expressed.
  5. Nutrition can substantially control the adverse effects of noxious chemicals.
  6. The same nutrition that prevents disease in its early stages can also halt or reverse it in its later stages.
  7. Nutrition that is truly beneficial for one chronic disease will support health across the board.
  8. Good nutrition creates health in all areas of our existence. All parts are interconnected.

NPR: I am astonished at the simplicity of the message.  You are a fascinating guest and I only slotted us for a few minutes.  In summation can you briefly give us the State of the Union now?

Mr. Welch:  With 14 years of adopting a Plant Based policy towards nutrition, the United States has enjoyed enormous prosperity.

Greenhouse emissions have decreased approximately 40% from levels in 2010-2025.  The reduction in the livestock makes up the majority of the reduction.  With that reduction in livestock our energy demands decreased accordingly; animal production is extremely costly when you examine transportation, water, feed, etc…  The most significant improvement has obviously been the near elimination of most chronic diseases that plagued our nation in the early part of the century.

Once we eliminated animal protein, we immediately saw giant improvements in our health; diabetes, heart disease, cancer are essentially now eliminated.  We are fitter and more productive as a society than we have ever been in our history and the future looks even brighter.
